Really? Man, I couldn't, but then, I've never been that great at figuring out twists in films.

DEVIL I enjoyed more than I thought I would. Even though I worked out pretty early on who the baddie was it didn't stop me enjoying it. The opening sequence made me feel sick too!

 That’s an interesting point, Ruth. It’s amazing that one of the
worlds most creative talent pools can be so ambivalent towards, or
completely against, most of the major religions around the place. You’re
right in saying that Hollywood usually mocks (not outright per se, but
in subtle ways) the Christian religion, and I think it’s a brave
filmmaker who uses religion of any kind in an honest way. Films such as
Saved (a great little film starring Mandy Moore and that Culkin kid)
push the Nutty Religious agenda, while people of a Muslin faith are
usually portrayed as scary/terrorists/untrustworthy – it’s a cliche to
use Muslim backgrounds for the Bad Guys as a rule, moreso in the 80′s I
think, and to this point I think Hollywood’s managed to skirt
controversy with their constant picking on those with faith as slightly
weird.

That being said, there’s nothing wrong with a blatant steal of
religious iconography – such as the Devil – as a generic villain as
well. End of Days, for example, stacked the Ultimate Villain up against
our worlds greatest action hero…. but it was never to the point of being sacrilegious. I actually enjoyed the religious motifs running through
Signs, and thought it was handled beautifully – Mel Gibson’s Catholic
preacher figure had to deal with one of man’s most painful questions:
how do we deal with God when he takes a loved one and makes us question
our belief?

Taking all this into account, Devil was a bit of stupid fun with few
lasting doubts. M Night badly needs a success to put him back on top…

Dealing with faith in a horror movie is tricky as a lot of people would automatically gets turned off by it or feels forced upon like Dan mentioned. I personally welcome the religious/faith themes in films as long as it's done in an honest way and not a mockery. It's quite rare of course as most of Hollywood are atheists and vehemently anti-God. Sounds like this one explores such a theme somewhat, which intrigues me. I know M. Night went to an Episcopalian school, and he's dealt with the theme of faith in Signs also.
