See, I felt Bateman suited the role perfectly - he acted tough, and felt like the Alpha Male, but came over as a little more impotent than he'd have liked. But, each to their own - the ending on this one is an absolute belter, you're right.

You'll see in my review I wasn't as positive about this film as so many have been but I still liked it a lot. The ending is a killer and really gives The Gift that added little extra it needed but I felt it wasn't particularly unique in any other way. I also didn't buy Bateman as the "tough guy" - I've seen Warrior and that scene when [SPOILER]Bateman throws Edgerton's character to the ground trying to scare him off is laughably unbelievable. That said, Edgerton's control of pace and atmosphere and his creepy use of lingering camera moves is definitely worth shouting about.
My recent post <a href="http://www.top10films.co.uk/archives/29670" rel="nofollow">Peter Strickland Seduces &amp; Invigorates With “The Duke Of Burgundy”</a>

I think it works so well because it subverts expectations. Just when you think you have a handle on it, it switches gears completely.

Ah yes, Joel Edgerton, the poor man's Tom Hardy. I'm surprised to see that pretty much every review of this movie is positive when it looks so dreadful. I suppose after reading your review I have no choice but to finally watch this one.

There's a maturity behind the camera here that I was not expecting from Edgerton. I too can't wait to see what he does next.

Such a surprisingly good movie and Edgerton's direction was amazing for his debut! Really interested in what he does next behind the camera.
