I agree: I think the quality of Eastwood's films have been far more sporadic than the quantity. Since his most recent flirtation with Oscar in the mid-2000's (Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, Flags Of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima), the critical and commercial acclaim for his film has felt nostalgic at best:

Changeling – Pretty good but largely unseen.
Gran Torino – his last truly awesome film, and a deserved classic.
Invictus – Competent but underwhelming given its subject.
Hereafter – did *anybody* see this?
J Edgar – Again, competent but vaguely biased (IMO), which hurt its longevity.
Jersey Boys – Just… no.
American Sniper – Divisive but I really enjoyed it, despite the controversy.

Of those 7 films, 1 is an outright classic, and 1 was successful purely off the back of its subject matter's controversial life and death, moreso than anything the film depicted. Not a great ratio of success, I'd wager.

Eastwood's direction has always been about character over action, so it was a given Sully was always going to be more about the man than the people he saved. I do like Eastwood's approach to the subject, giving the title character a sense of wounded (or, unintentional) heroism and while I think Hanks delivers a solid job, the backstory to Sullenberger's personality wasn't developed enough (IMO). I'd love to have seen a touch more of his relationship with his family (poor Laura Linney, literally phoning it in), or his work colleagues to give context to his personality *after* the event.
