{"id":19593,"date":"2012-01-25T18:00:23","date_gmt":"2012-01-25T07:30:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fernbyfilms.com\/?p=19593"},"modified":"2018-03-15T22:30:26","modified_gmt":"2018-03-15T12:00:26","slug":"the-oscar-nominations-what-we-think","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fernbyfilms.com\/2012\/01\/25\/the-oscar-nominations-what-we-think\/","title":{"rendered":"The Oscar Nominations &#8211; What We Think!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-19595\" title=\"Nominations-Washup\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fernbyfilms.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Nominations-Washup-800x320-custom.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"320\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Frankly, the Academy has no idea. <em>Drive<\/em>, a film I consider to be easily the best film of 2011, missed out on virtually any Oscar nominations at all, save a filler spot for Best Sound Editing (I mean, c&#8217;mon, when you&#8217;re up against a <em>Transformers<\/em> movie, what hope to you have?) &#8211; not even Albert Brooks&#8217; nasty turn as a gangster in that film was\u00a0given so much as a nod.\u00a0Instead, Melissa McCarthy now becomes an Oscar nominee for her work in the female slanted comedy <em>Bridesmaids<\/em>. Really?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And so the frustrating spectacle of seeing truly great films miss out on the Oscar glow comes around again.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I guess the question could be asked: why exactly do we hinge our film\u00a0 fanaticism on the black-slappers in the Academy as being the pinnacle of truly awesome cinema? I mean, these are the people who allow films like <em>Jack &amp; Jill<\/em> and<em> Big Momma&#8217;s: Like Father, Like Son<\/em> to be made in the first place. How can we trust these<em> clowns<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Oscar nominations for films of 2011 have raised a number of interesting\u00a0points:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>1<\/strong> &#8211; A silent film, in the modern age of digital cinema, surround sound and color film, is in the running for &#8211; and frankly odds-on to win &#8211; Best Picture. If you&#8217;d told me 12 months ago that I&#8217;d be staring at a silent film for a Best Picture award, I&#8217;d have happily signed the form to have you locked up in the madhouse. <em>The Artist<\/em>, by all accounts, should take the top prize this year. Its only real competition looks to be <em>The Descendants<\/em>, with an outsiders chance for <em>The Help<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>2<\/strong> &#8211; If Rooney Mara scores an Oscar for her work in David Fincher&#8217;s <em>Girl With The Dragon Tattoo<\/em> remake, then the Academy needs to award one to Noomi Rapace (retrospectively) as well. How Rapace never scored a gong for her work in the original Swedish version is beyond me, so to see Mara snag a look-in for a remake, a<em> reprisal<\/em>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">that<\/span> sticks in my craw.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>3<\/strong> &#8211; It&#8217;s weird not seeing a Pixar film in the Best Animated Feature category. I&#8217;d be happy for either<em> Puss In Boots<\/em> or <em>Rango<\/em> to take home the gong.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>4<\/strong> &#8211; Only two songs are nominated for the Best Original Song category this year. I ask the Academy: is it really <em>worth it<\/em>? Isn&#8217;t this the kind of thing the Grammys are supposed to look at?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>5<\/strong> &#8211; From what I&#8217;ve seen, either <em>Hugo<\/em> or <em>Tree Of Life<\/em> should win Best Cinematography.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>6<\/strong> &#8211; Meryl Streep is once more nominated for an Oscar. Some folks (including several of our readers!) have indicated that perhaps she should sit a few years out and let others have a shot, but I still gaze in amazement at the woman&#8217;s ability to transform so effortlessly into each character she plays. Streep for the win (again) as Margaret Thatcher.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>7<\/strong> &#8211; Visual effects will go to either <em>Transformers<\/em> or <em>Rise Of The Planet of The Apes<\/em>, and in my mind, each would be a worthy winner. My hot tip is for <em>Transformers<\/em>, though.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>8<\/strong> &#8211; This year is Gary Oldman&#8217;s Oscar year. As I write this, I have <em>Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy<\/em> on my list of films to watch next week, and from what I&#8217;ve heard about the blogoverse, he&#8217;s better in that film than Clooney is in <em>The Descendents<\/em>. So I&#8217;m gonna stick my arm up for Oldman.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>9<\/strong> &#8211; Is it just me, or is the sight of Jonah Hill&#8217;s name alongside the likes of Christopher Plummer, Kenneth Branagh, Nick Nolte and Max von Sydow, for Best Supporting Actor,\u00a0just a little jarring?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>10<\/strong> &#8211; My official tips for the big four &#8211; <em>The Artist<\/em>, director Michel Hazanavicius, Gary Oldman and Meryl Streep.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Oscars will be broadcast on Sunday February 26th (US time), or around lunchtime next day (Monday 27th) here in Australia &#8211; we will have a live update post on the day, for those of you stuck at work and unable to watch live!!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What Others Are Saying About The Oscars:<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Dan over at <em>Top 10 Films<\/em> has a little article about the fact The Artist is up for best Picture!: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.top10films.co.uk\/archives\/10239\">&#8220;Okay, okay, so Martin Scorsese\u2019s brilliant 3D extravaganza Hugo got more Oscar nominations than The Artist but \u2013 and correct if I\u2019m wrong\u2026isn\u2019t it about that great silent film pioneer Georges Melies\u2026&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Sam over at <em>Duke &amp; The Movies<\/em> got up early to watch the nominations come through&#8230;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Jessica over at<em> The Velvet Cafe<\/em> had a few words:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/thevelvetcafe.wordpress.com\/2012\/01\/24\/scattered-thoughts-on-the-oscar-nominations-from-a-swedish-perspective\/\">&#8220;The Oscar nominations is a good time for film buffs to get out of their bubble.&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Max over at<em> Impassioned Cinema<\/em> gives his own views on the noms!: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.impassionedcinema.com\/oscar-2011-nominations-shocks-disappointments\/\">&#8220;I kept waking up hoping that I wouldn\u2019t miss it. That\u2019s when you know you really love something.&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3>Ruth over at Flixchatter got into the swing of things: <a href=\"http:\/\/flixchatter.net\/2012\/01\/24\/oscar-2012-nominations-the-good-the-bad-and-the-wtf\/\">&#8220;<em>Extremely Loud &amp; Incredibly Close<\/em> up for Best Picture??
